Розміри представників ґрунтової біоти варіюють від 10 мкм до 20-30 см. Особливий інтерес становить мезофауна. Представники мезофауни володіють адаптаціями до локомоції у ґрунті, що надає можливість ним пересуватися у ґрунтовому просторі на значні відстані у пошуку більш сприятливих умов існування. Мезофауна становить значну компоненту біорізноманіття ґрунтової біоти, що важливо при застосуванні одержаних експериментальних результатів для зоологічної індикації екологічних режимів. Вивчення просторової організації мезопедобіонтів є однією із складових подальшого аналізу їх ролі у функціонуванні біогеоценозів.
