Українське історіописання Другої світової війни впродовж останніх двадцяти п’яти років пройшло цікавий еволюційний шлях, поступово формуючи власні україноцентричні погляди на останнє глобальне військове протистояння. У контексті основних напрямів роботи українських учених за останні десятиліття слід виділити працю над ліквідацією, сформованих у радянський період, історіографічних лакун. Безперечно, що однією з таких «прогалин» була проблема остарбайтерів чи робітників «другого сорту», серед яких мало не половина походили з України.
