The geographical position of Ukraine The area of Ukraine is 233 088 square miles (603 700 sq. km). She is a bit larger than France. Ukraine mostly is a vast plain, which has no natural boundaries, with the exception of the Carpathian Mountains in the South West and the Black Sea in the South. The river Dnieper with its tributaries comprises the central part of Ukraine economically, combining the country's Baltic coast with the black and the Mediterranean seas. The mouth of the Danube River provides the Ukrainian trade outlet on the Balkans, in Austria and Germany. The central part and the South of Ukraine are mostly steppes with fertile čornozemom, which is especially suitable for growing grain crops. To the East is an important industrial area known as Big Donbass, Donetsk or Carboniferous basin, where there are large deposits of minerals. North and West of Ukraine is gorbkuvatì, planted with forest land, with its scenic mountain resorts. Here are two strands of mountain: on the western border of Ukraine, Carpathians, where winter sports are very popular, and the Crimean Ridge separating the Crimean peninsula. Crimea is a popular place not only Ukrainian, but also citizens of other States of the former Soviet Union.
