Ґрунтуючись на вже поширених стереотипах і міфах, російська пропаганда викривила справжні причини й перебіг протестів, демонізувала Майдан, навішала на нього негативні ярлики й закликала російськомовне населення України «захищатися». Це відбувалося на тлі демонізації Євросоюзу й НАТО, дискредитації євроінтеграційного курсу, формування брехливих міфів стосовно цих міжнародних інституцій ( пропаганда гомофобії в ЄС, одностатеві шлюби, маніпуляція релігійними питаннями тощо).
