Національне управління з аеронавтики та космонавтики було засновано у 1958 році для здійснення космічної програми США. Воно вивело на навколоземну орбіту перші американські супутники та космонавтів, а також здійснило запуск космічного корабля "Аполлон", який у 1969 році висадив перших людей на Місяць. Сьогодні НАСА проводить дослідження на борту навколоземних супутників і міжпланетних зондів, вивчає інноваційні підходи до розробки передових космічних технологій та має у своєму розпорядженні американський флот пілотованих орбітальних космічних човнів багаторазового використання типу "шатл".
