Одне з найперших тлумачень поняття «казка» представлено в словнику В.І. Даля: «Казка - розповідь, повість, переказ... Казка - вигадана розповідь, небувала й навіть нездійсненна повість …» [19-22]. У словнику С.І. Ожегова фіксується два основні значення слова «казка»: 1. Розповідний, зазвичай народно поетичний твір про вигадані герої та події, переважно за участю чарівних, фантастичних сил. 2. Вигадка, неправда, брехня.» [78]. У короткій літературної енциклопедії представлено визначення Е.В. Помаранцевої: «Казка - один з основних жанрів усної народно поетичної творчості, епічний, переважно прозовий художній твір чарівного, авантюрного або побутового характеру з установкою на вигадку» [10].
