7 листопада 1708 року у Глухові козаки обирають Івана Ілліча Скоропадського гетьманом України, а Петро І затверджує його на цій посаді.
По різному оцінюють історики діяльність гетьмана Івана Скоропадського. Зокрема, Михайло Грушевський вважав, що цар призначив його гетьманом тому, що „він старий, плохий і недотепа і ним легше було по своїй волі обертати”. Натомість, Н.Полонська-Василенко наголошує, що це був період швидкого зростання могутності Московської держави, яка офіційно перетворилась в Російську імперію. Отож гетьману „треба було багато такту, вміння лявірувати між тріумфуючим переможцем, який не приховував уже свого бажання остаточно знищити українську державу і прагненням врятувати рештки державності”.
