Для словникового складу технічної літератури характерне
застосування великої кількості технічних термінів, тобто слів або
словосполучень, що позначають технічні поняття. Провести чітку межу
між термінами та словами повсякденної мови неможливо внаслідок
багатозначності слів. Наприклад, такі загальновідомі поняття, як
«електрика», «температура», «автомобіль», і часто вживані слова «атом»,
«пластмаса», «вітамін», «антибіотик», «пеніцилін», «космос», не є
термінами в повсякденній мові, де технічний початок грає другорядну
(підпорядковану) роль.
