Rightly believing that the definition of the concept of "fairy tale" logically start with the study of the word "fairy tale", from, as denoted by this concept in different languages, and, consequently, that the people himself understands the word "tale", V. Ya. Propp comes to an unexpected conclusion: European peoples, as a rule, do not designate this kind of folk poetry, using for its definition in a variety of words. There are only a few European languages that have created special words to denote this concept, in particular the German language. In the Ukrainian language, along with the word "fable", there is the word "fairy tale". Both denote not only the story, but also fiction, unworthy trust. In the German-language tale denoted by the word Marchen. The root mage means "news", "news,-chen-diminutal suffix. Marchen – "A Little Interesting story" (the word is found from the XIII century and gradually entrenched in the meaning of "fairy tale") [50]. As for the Italian language, the word "tale" corresponds to the words Fiaba and Favola, formed from the Latin fabula, which has many different meanings: conversation, gossip, the subject of conversation, etc., and including a Tale and a fable, as well as in other words, such as Conto, Racconto. In the French language, the word "fairy tale" corresponds to the word conte, indicating "narrative". Often to clarify this word add Conte populaire, that is, "People's Story", and conte de fees, that is "the story of Fairies", which is suitable only for magic fairy tales. Sometimes the meaning of "tale" Take Recit ("story") or Legende ("Legend"). There is no single word that represents a fairy tale in English, like the French or Italian. The fairy tale is called the word tale, that, according to meaning, means "the story in general." Similarly, the French language is said: Fairy-tale, that is "Fein fairy tale". Tales for young children are designated the word nursery-tale (from Nurse-"babysitter"). The meaning of "tale" is also used words story ("story") and Legend ("Legend") [54].
