Трансформаційний підхід розглядає переклад як перетворення об’єктів і структури однієї мови в об’єкти і структури
іншої відповідно до певних правил [15, c. 219–220]. Відомо,
що в ході трансформації відбуваються перетворення на різних
мовних рівнях – морфологічному, лексичному, синтаксичному.
У межах опису процесу перекладу перекладацькі трансформації розглядаються не в статичному плані як засіб аналізу зв’язків між одиницями мови оригіналу та їхніми словниковими відповідниками. У плані динамічному їх трактують як
способи перекладу, які їх може використовувати перекладач під
час перекладу різних оригіналів у тих випадках, коли словниковий відповідник відсутній або не може бути використаний в
умовах контексту. Залежно від характеру одиниць МО, які розглядаються як вихідні в операції перетворення, перекладацькі
трансформації діляться на лексичні та граматичні. Крім того,
існують також комплексні лексико-граматичні трансформації,
де перетворення або стосуються одночасно лексичних і граматичних одиниць оригіналу, або є міжрівневими, тобто здійснюють перехід від лексичних і навпаки. У зв’язку з цим багато
лінгвістів схильні розглядати процес перекладу в три етапи
[8; 16; 17]. На першому етапі структури оригіналу перетворюються в ядерні структури МО; на другому – ядерні структури
МО замінюються еквівалентними структурами МП; на третьому – ядерні структури МП розгортаються до термінальних
структур МП.
