Святослав Вакарчук народився 14 травня 1975 року в місті Мукачево, Закарпатської області в Україні у сім'ї львівського професора фізики (батько Іван Вакарчук, з 1984 року ректор Національного Університету імені Івана Франка).

Улюблений мультфільм з дитинства - "Ну, постривай!", улюблені кумири - батько, Джон Леннон, Джим Моррісон, Юрій Гагарін. З шести років пішов у львівську елітну школу № 4 (з поглибленим вивченням англійської мови), яку закінчив з срібною медаллю (мав одну четвірку з математики). Лідером не був, але вплив на шкільне життя здійснював - готував стінгазети, брав участь у КВК, створенні шкільного театру, активно займався баскетболом. Два роки займався у музичній школі по класу скрипки, паралельно навчаючись грі на баяні. Має дві вищі освіти (теоретична фізика та міжнародна економіка), які набув у Львівському університеті.

Теоретична фізика залишила слід і в музичній творчості Славка. В 1996-у вступив в аспірантуру на кафедрі теоретичної фізики того ж університету. Тема його кандидатської дисертації "Суперсиметрія електронів у магнітному полі". Більше того, з деяких цілком поінформованих джерел стало відомо, що SUSY - це зовсім не дівчина, а абревіатура від "SUperSYmmetry".

Лідер гурту Океан Ельзи і автор майже усіх текстів. В гурті його звуть Славік або Славко. Полюбляє овочі і фрукти, темне пиво (з міцних напоів - "Криваву Мері"), книгу Барон Мюнгхаузен, Едіт Піаф, Stone Roses, баскетбол, трасу Київ-Львів. Після виходу "Ґлорії" у 2005 році, де почали з'являтися певні соціально-політичні уривки та філософські запитання, стає послом доброї волі ООН в Україні. Проводить зустрічі із студентами по всій Україні. У парламентських виборах 2006 відкрито не підтримує жодну з політичних сил. Коли після простою та політичної кризи-2007 було ухвалено рішення провести позачергові вибори до Верховної Ради, то співак увійшов до списку пропрезидентської "Нашої Україна-Народної самооборони". Водночас він не є членом жодної політичної партії. Народний депутат України 6-го скликання.

Одружений з 2007 року. Його обраницею є дизайнер та багатолітній офіційний стиліст Океану Ельзи Ляля Фонарьова. Дату виходу альбому "Міра" — 25 квітня вибрано, бо саме ця дата є днем народження Лялі.

На виборах 2004 року активно підтримував на той момент опозиційного лідера Віктора Ющенка. Святослав Вакарчук був активним учасником Помаранчевої революції, виступав на концертах на підтримку Віктора Ющенко на Майдані Незалежності разом з Русланою, Олегом Скрипкою та іншими музикантами і співаками.
