Однією з найвеличніших на Січі була церква Покрова Богородиці, яка могла позмагатися коштовностями й оздобленням із ризницею Києво-Печерської лаври. Всередині вражав величезний багатоярусний іконопис із церковними воротами, відлитими з чистого срібла та позолоченими. У композиції іконостаса центральне місце посідала ікона "Покрова". Вона відрізнялася від подібних образів.
На іконі невідомий майстер насмілився зобразити не лише Богоматір - заступницю січовиків, а й козацтво - останнього кошового отамана Петра Калнишевського в колі братчиків-товаришів.
Посередині ікони - біло-золотисті хмари, які оточують Богоматір кільцем-ореолом. Вона стоїть на хмарах, молода і красива, схиливши голову на лівий бік. У широко розставлених руках Богоматір тримає рушник (омофор). Верхній одяг козацької Мадонни змальований у червоно-оранжевих, золотистих тонах. Поруч з нею - патрони Січі: святі Микола Угодник та архістратиг Михаїл - верховний воєначальник у боротьбі з ворогами Бога.
Постаті козаків розташовані півколом над краями ікони. Внизу - козацькі прапори (червоні, сині, білі, блакитні), гармати, клейноди (булави, пірначі). З правого боку, внизу, - сивий кошовий отаман Петро Калнишевський.
