Суттєвим кроком у вивченні питання ненормативної лексики став доробок британського лексикографа Е. Патріджа, який одним із перших порушив питання про статус сленгу. Він простежив культурно-історичні передумови динамічного розвитку неформального мовлення та популярності сленгу на північно-американському континенті, а також вказав на те, що слово «slang» скоріш за все співвідноситься з дієсловом «to sling» – вимовляти, що підтверджує існування такого поєднання як sling words, яке функціонувало ще в епоху Дж. Чосера [9, с.14].
