THE PEOPLE WE
Though the United States was recognized as an independent nation when the war was over, it was not one nation as it is today.
In 1783 most Americans saw themselves first as citizens of their own state than of the new United States. Each individual American country had its own government and behaved very much like an independent state.
Leading statesmen, such as George Washington and Alexander Hamilton, began to discuss the creation of a strong national government under a new constitution.
The Constitution of the United States created federal system of the government which began to function in 1789.
The Constitution consists of a preamble, seven articles and 26 amendments. The first 10 called the Bill are of Rights.
The Constitution begins with the famous Preamble:
The Constitution of the US sets forth the nation's fundamental
laws. Establishes the form It of the national government and defines
the rights and liberties of the American people.
The Bill of Rights was added original because the Constitution said nothing about the rights and freedoms of individual citizens. The Bill of Rights promised to protect individual rights and freedoms. It promised all Americans freedom of religion, a free press, free speech, the right to carry arms, the right to a fair trial by jury, and protection against "cruel and unusual punishments",
The President (any natural-born citizen over 34 ) is elected for a term of four years and can only be re-elected for one more term. The power of the President is limited by the Congress. Rule is The "the President proposes, but Congress disposes."
American history knew great presidents who did much for their country. Among them were George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
